NORTH CAROLINA (LOOTPRESS) – A former West Virginia state senator is headed back to the campaign trail this fall — this time in North Carolina.
Richard Ojeda, a Logan County native and former member of the West Virginia Senate, won the Democratic nomination Tuesday in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District.
He will face Republican incumbent Richard Hudson in the November general election for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Ojeda, a 24-year U.S. Army veteran, served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti and spent 15 years stationed at Fort Bragg.
His campaign platform focuses on supporting veterans, protecting public education, investing in North Carolina’s economy, strengthening Medicare and Medicaid, raising wages, repealing “Right to Work” laws and protecting Social Security benefits.
Before relocating to North Carolina, Ojeda was active in West Virginia politics.
He represented Logan County in the West Virginia Senate and mounted several high-profile campaigns, including bids for U.S. Congress, the U.S. Senate and President of the United States. He was unsuccessful in each of those races.
Other Democratic candidates in the North Carolina primary included Loren Bibler, Nigel Bristow and Lent Carr II.
Ojeda’s nomination sets up a general election contest against Hudson, who currently represents the district in Congress.
