BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Beckley Common Council met Tuesday evening in a meeting during which bids were discussed for several construction and maintenance projects for the city.
These discussions entailed, among other things, the awarding of bids for work on Freedom Park on Eisenhower Drive, the reconstruction of Nebraska, Washington, 9th, and 10th Streets, and a number of projects for maintenance of Scott Ave. Park including the paving of a basketball court, installation of recreation equipment, poured-in rubber surfacing, and fencing.
Council opened bids on these projects during last month’s Common Council meeting, which was held on May 24. Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold was not in attendence at this meeting.
The projects will be funded through funds received from the Community Development Block Grant, from which the city receives about $280,000 each year, according to City Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer, and Recorder Billie Trump.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is awarded through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and seeks to improve quality of life in low to moderate income communities through the establishment and development of infrastructure, economic development projects, public facilities installation, community centers, housing rehabilitation, public services, clearance/acquisition, microenterprise assistance, code enforcement, homeowner assistance, and more.
Per the guidelines of many of these types of grants, council is required to accept the lowest project bid that also meets the required specifications of the project.
The Freedom Park installation project saw two bids, including one from Raleigh County contractor Radford & Radford Inc. A bid for $249,999.56 which met all required specifications was accepted.
Radford and Radford also submitted a bid for reconstruction work on Nebraska, Washington, 9th, and 10th Streets, as did Court Street Construction LLC of Fayetteville. The project ultimately went to Radford and Radford for a bid of $237,500.Â
Southern West Virginia Paving, Inc was awarded the bid for the paving of the Scott Ave. Park basketball court for $55,800, beating out an offer from Exterior Services, LLC of Princeton.
While Court Street Construction’s bid for the Nebraska, Washington, 9th, and 10th streets reconstruction project was unsuccessful, they did manage to secure the sizable project for the installation of recreation equipment, rubber surfacing, and fencing at Scott Ave. Park.
Court Street Construction’s submission edged out an unspecified bid from Radford & Radford.Â
Construction plans for these projects will be contingent on a number of factors, not the least of which is the weather. As such, no immediate plans have yet been announced.
