MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A freight train derailment near the West Virginia/Virginia state line was determined to have occurred on the West Virginia side in Mercer County, according to officials.
Authorities said 13 train cars derailed in the incident. No injuries were reported among the train crew.
Emergency response agencies from the region responded to the scene, along with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which assessed potential environmental impacts.
According to Norfolk Southern, no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment.
Officials said the only substance released was soybean oil, which does not pose an environmental risk.
Crews remained on scene working to assess the situation and begin cleanup efforts.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
