CLAY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A full-scale active shooter response training exercise will take place at Clay County Middle School on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Organized as part of Winter Disaster Exercise 2024, the event is a collaboration between the Clay County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Clay County Schools, and local and state emergency response agencies.
The exercise aims to simulate an active shooter scenario, testing emergency response plans, agency coordination, and real-time communication.
Organizers emphasize the importance of community involvement and are calling for volunteers to help create a realistic training environment.

Volunteer Roles Needed
- Civilians (parents, students, bystanders)
- Teachers/School staff
- First responders, including police officers, nurses, EMTs/paramedics, firefighters, and 911 dispatchers
Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and will only participate in non-active shooter scenarios, such as acting as patients during the mass casualty portion of the exercise.
Participation Requirements
- Volunteers must be 18 or older or accompanied by a legal guardian if under 18.
- All participants must adhere to strict safety protocols and remain in designated areas.
- Safety coordinators will oversee the exercise to ensure a secure environment.
The community is advised that emergency vehicle activity and radio traffic will occur throughout the day in the vicinity of Clay County Middle School.
A Public Service Announcement (PSA) will also air on local emergency services radios to inform residents about the exercise.
Organizers stress that no live weapons will be present, and the training is a controlled event focused on improving preparedness and interagency collaboration.
