NITRO, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Some residents throughout the Nitro area faced evacuation Thursday due to a gas leak after a contractor hit a pair of gas lines while working in the area.
As reported by the Nitro Police Department on Thursday, residents in the Main Avenue area of Nitro from Lock Street to Dogwood Street and to the river were impacted by effects of a gas leak, with residents in these areas having been asked to evacuate as a result.
A shelter at the Hansford Center in St. Albans was made available for impacted residents and KRT bus transport was made available to those requiring transportation.
As of 12:45pm on Thursday, per a release from Kanawha County, the evacuation order has been lifted according to a statement from Mountaineer Gas to first responders. Emergency crews are said to be on-site cleaning up and work concludes.
The evacuation, reportedly a precautionary measure, came about following the striking of two gas lines by a contractor working in the Main Avenue and Ash Street area near Diehl’s Restaurant.
