Charleston – After getting her feet wet last year, Webster County junior Sydney Baird knew what to expect coming into this year’s state tournament.
The lessons she picked up were on display Tuesday night as the junior all-stater scored 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting, grabbing 12 rebounds and guiding the No. 5 Highlanders to a 54-37 win over No. 4 Doddridge County in the Class A quarterfinal at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
Teammate Hannah Cutlip added 12 points in the win for Webster.
Abby McDonough led Doddridge County with 14 points and 10 rebounds on 5 of 21 shooting from the floor.
Webster improves to 20-5 and earns a rematch with No. 1 seed Gilmer County, a team that beat the Highlanders 79-38 in the regular season. The semifinal game is set for Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
