Outstanding seasons merit accolades.
This year there were three area coaches that stood above their peers in regards to how they led their teams and what they accomplished. At Lootpress we need your help in deciding our inaugural Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Below are the candidates as well as what they accomplished this season.
The fan poll will be used in the event of a tie.
- Angie Boninsegna, Wyoming East – Boninsgena led the Lady Warriors to 16-4 record and the Class AA state title game, finishing as the state runner-up. The run back to Charleston came after the Lady Warriors lost three starters from last year’s state championship squad and played the first half of the season without another. Along the way the veteran head coach led East to wins over eventual Class AAA champion Logan, Class AAA state semifinalist PikeView and other ranked teams such as Mingo Central, Summers County and Chapmanville.
- Chad Meador, Summers County – A year after missing the state tournament and graduating two all-staters, Meador led the Lady Bobcats back to the state tournament, guiding them through Class AA’s toughest region and picking up a road regional win at Mingo Central. Some of Summers’ signature victories were over Mingo Central (twice) and PikeView (twice). Summers finished the season 16-8.
- Tracy Raban, PikeView – Raban led the Panthers back to the Class AAA semifinal, beating defending Class AAA champion Nitro in the opening round of the state tournament. Raban prepared her squad well for the trip to Charleston, playing games against four Class AAAA schools in Princeton, Huntington, Spring Valley and Beckley. The Panthers also played games against Class AAA champion Logan, Class AA runner-up Wyoming East and Class AA quarterfinalist Summers County. PikeView finished 17-8 this past season.
Final votes will be tallied on Monday, March 21 at 11:59 p.m. The winner will receive a $500 grant for their program from The Lootpress Foundation and be honored at the Lootpress Spring Sports Banquet.
