Matewan – Mingo Central all-stater Addie Smith hit a fading corner 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left Wednesday as Class AA No. 2 Mingo Central beat No. 1 Wyoming East 37-36 at Mingo Central.
The win comes after the Miners fell 57-40 at Wyoming East last month.
Smith was the only scorer to reach double figures, pouring in a game-high 18 points.
East, which led by four with under 27 seconds to go, went 3 of 7 from the free throw in the final 48 seconds with numerous opportunities to seal the victory.
The two teams split the season series to this point with each winning on their respective home floors. A third regular-season matchup on a neutral court is a possibility with both slated to play in the Battle for the Springhouse at the Greenbrier next month. Mingo Central will open that tournament with Class AAAA Greenbrier East while East will face Class AAA No. 2 Nitro.
Mingo improves to 9-1 while Wyoming East drops to 8-2 and will travel to Bluefield on Friday.
