Beckley – Wheeling Park is hoping to be the team that replaces Huntington atop the Class AAAA mountain.
The Patriots proved they’re worthy in their matchup against the old guard.
Behind 27 points from all-stater Alexis Bordas, the No. 1-ranked Patriots weathered every Huntington run to secure a 66-50 victory against the two-time defending champion Highlanders Friday at the New River CTC Invitational at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
Trailing by nine before the half, Jada Turner nailed a 3 for Huntington before the break to answer a Bordas trey, part of personal 7-0 run for Turner that spanned across the second and third quarters.
After the Highlanders cut the lead to two Bordas answered with another trey but the Highlanders slashed it to one after an Amara Jackson layup. Another Bordas trey following a Lala Woods layup cushioned the lead which never fell below five the rest of the way.
Wheeling Park will return to the Beckley-Raleigh County Saturday when it faces Beckley.
