Charleston – Having played each four times already coming into the Class AAAA title game, there were no secrets when No. 1 Wheeling Park and No. 2 Morgantown matched up on Championship Saturday.
Still, it made for a great thriller.
Tied at 47 with 1:32 to play, Morgantown finished the game on a 7-0 run, going 5 of 7 at the free throw line to secure a 54-50 win in the Class AAAA title game at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
An Alexis Bordas 3-pointer with seven seconds left accounted for the final points but otherwise the game belonged to the Mohigans in crunch time.
Having played four times this season prior to Saturday’s matchup, Morgantown sported a 1-3 record in the series.
Using and aggressive approach, the Mohigans drove the lane and drew contact, shooting 22 free throws to Parks’ 7 while also out-rebounding the Patriots 40-26 with 19 of those coming on the offensive glass.
Lily Jordan led the assault for the Mohigans with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the win while Sofia Wassick added 14 and Kate Hawkins 12.
Bordas came alive in the second half for Park, scoring 21 of her game-high 24 points after the intermission. She was flanked by fellow sophomore Lala Woods who pitched in 14 points in the loss.
Morgantown finishes the season with a 23-5 record, notching the 10th title in program history.
Wheeling Park finishes 25-3 and will return standouts Bordas, Woods and Natalie Daugherty.
