Charleston – Charleston Catholic’s Molly Messer’s made a tying layup in the waning seconds of regulation, sending the team’s Class AA quarterfinal game against Wheeling Central into overtime where the Irish won, upsetting the Maroon Knights 47-45.
With the win Charleston Catholic advances to Friday morning’s Class AA semifinal where it will play No. 1 Summers County at 11:15 a.m.
Tied at 44 in overtime, Charleston Catholic’s Mary Rushworth made a layup to give the Irish the lead. The teams traded a free throw each in the final minute but Charleston’s defense held Wheeling Central without a shot attempt to secure the win.
Messer led the Irish with 14 points while Claire Mullen netted 11.
Brook Edge scored 15 for Central in the loss.
