Charleston – No. 4 Morgantown climbed out of an early 18-4 deficit Friday afternoon in the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, claiming a 54-50 victory over No. 1 George Washington in the Class AAAA semifinals.
The win sets up a rematch of last year’s title game between Morgantown and Wheeling Park, a game won by the Mohigans.
After hitting seven shots in the opening quarter the top-seeded Patriots took two quarters to double that total, falling cold in those middle frames.
Zaniah Zellous proved to be the Patriots’ top source of offense with 20 points but was the only player to cross the double-digit threshold for her team.
Kayli Kellogg netted 18 to lead Morgantown, adding 12 rebounds and four consecutive makes from the charity stripe in the final seconds to cement the victory. Sofia Wassick added 17 points in the victory.
The title matchup will mark the 15th meeting between Morgantown and Park since the start of the 2021-22 season. Morgantown has gotten the better of the Patriots over that span, eliminating them in the 2022 state tournament and ’23 title game.
