HEDGESVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Patrick Morrisey visited Hedgesville Middle School today to promote new legislation aimed at helping veterans transition into careers as teachers.
Surrounded by students, lawmakers, supporters, and two teachers who previously served in the armed forces, the governor held a ceremonial signing of Senate Bill 765, which establishes a Troops-to-Teachers program in West Virginia.
“Quality teachers are foundational to educational success, and our veterans can bring their unique background and experiences to educate the next generation of West Virginians,” said Governor Morrisey.
“Troops-to-Teachers is a successful program that will benefit both our students and our veteran community.”
The bill is designed to provide a streamlined pathway for service members and veterans to become certified K-12 teachers in the state, allowing them to gain classroom experience while completing the necessary certification requirements.
“As a WV National Guard Green Beret and a father, I’ve seen firsthand the value of discipline, leadership, and mentorship,” said Senator Tom Willis.
“Veterans are uniquely suited to bring those qualities into our classrooms — to lead, inspire, and shape the next generation. The Troops to Teachers Act creates a fast, fair, and effective pathway for military veterans to become certified teachers in West Virginia without the need for a teaching degree. With this pro-veteran legislation, we are building stronger classrooms, stronger communities, and a stronger West Virginia.”
Troops-to-Teachers is a national program that supports veterans in making the transition to the education field, providing guidance through the certification process and opportunities to work in schools while meeting the necessary qualifications.
