CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Friday that an additional $2.5 million has been sent to support food banks and pantries across West Virginia, bringing the state’s total emergency food assistance to $8.6 million amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The funds come as nearly 270,000 West Virginians are expected to lose access to new SNAP benefits starting November 1, 2025.
Last week, the governor expedited $1.1 million to food banks, followed by an additional $5 million earlier this week.
“As Senator Chuck Schumer and the democrats in Congress continue to play games with the livelihoods of West Virginians, we will not let our people go hungry,” said Governor Morrisey.
“We have sent $8.6 million to date, and will continue to monitor the situation closely to determine the next steps to take care of our most vulnerable citizens.”
Under Governor Morrisey’s direction, the West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) has been activated to assist local food banks and community organizations with staffing and logistical needs.
“We stand ready to support our state partner agencies, local food banks and non-profit organizations with critical logistical support to keep food on the table for West Virginia families,” said WVNG Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward.
“Point us at a task, no matter how small or difficult and our Soldiers and Airmen can get it done.”
The Guard’s mission includes receiving, sorting, packaging, and distributing food, managing traffic and crowds, providing transportation and storage support, and ensuring safe and orderly distribution.
Governor Morrisey also encouraged residents, businesses, churches, and community organizations to contribute directly to the state’s two primary food banks—Facing Hunger Food Bank and Mountaineer Food Bank.
Donations can be made at facinghunger.org/donate-now or mountaineerfoodbank.harnessgiving.org/donate, with contributions split evenly between both organizations.
Families in need of assistance can call 2-1-1 or visit wv211.org for local pantry information and resources, or contact their local Family Resource Network (FRN) for updated food distribution details.
