HINTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey held a ceremonial signing on Wednesday for two recently passed bills that significantly impact state policy on diversity programs and medical care for transgender minors.
Senate Bill 474 eliminates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs within state agencies, public schools, and higher education institutions.
The bill mandates the removal of DEI offices and personnel and requires colleges and universities to redirect any unused funds previously allocated to such initiatives.
Senate Bill 299 prohibits medical professionals from providing gender-affirming treatments, including hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery, to individuals under the age of 18.
It also bans the prescription of gender-altering medications to minors via telehealth services.
Governor Morrisey, speaking at the Summers County Memorial Building in Hinton, said the legislation reflects his administration’s goal of what he described as promoting “common sense” and protecting children.
“We will lead with common sense, treat every citizen the same under the law, and protect children from making life-altering decisions at a young age,” he stated.
The signing ceremony was attended by state legislators and supporters.
The governor also referenced earlier efforts targeting DEI initiatives, including an executive order and the signing of the Riley Gaines Act, which addresses participation of transgender athletes in school sports.
Both laws are part of a broader trend in several states to roll back DEI policies and restrict gender-affirming medical care for minors.
