Greenbrier County Schools announces reduced school day schedule

LEWISBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Greenbrier County Schools (GCS) will implement a reduced school day schedule starting this fall.

This adjustment aims to provide a balanced approach to education while maintaining high instructional standards.

Since the early 1970s, Greenbrier County Schools have surpassed state-required instructional time, accruing additional minutes that allowed for extensive educational opportunities and ample time for make-up days.

After thorough evaluation, the decision was made to reduce the daily schedule to better meet the needs of students, staff, and families, according to GCS.

Key Changes:

Reduced Daily Instructional Minutes: The new schedule decreases instructional minutes each day while still exceeding state requirements.

Maintained Accrued Time for Make-Up Days:

Despite the reduction, schools will retain sufficient accrued instructional time for make-up days.

Enhanced Balance for Students and Staff:

The change provides more time for extracurricular activities, rest, and family engagements, creating a well-rounded educational experience.

Benefits of the New Schedule:

Increased Focus on Quality Over Quantity:

Teachers can concentrate on delivering high-quality, engaging lessons without an overly extended school day.

Support for Student Well-Being:

A shorter school day can reduce stress and burnout among students.

Enhanced Afterschool Opportunities:

Students will have opportunities for individualized tutoring, free dinner, and other educational programs in optional afterschool programs.

Staff Professional Development:

The revised schedule offers additional time for professional development, planning, and collaboration.

Superintendent Jeff Bryant expressed excitement about the changes.

“We believe this adjustment will benefit our students and staff by providing a healthier balance between academic demands and personal well-being,” Bryant said.

“Our commitment to delivering exceptional education remains unwavering, and we are confident that this new schedule will support that mission.”

According to West Virginia State Board of Education Policy 2510, the minimum instructional time requirements vary by grade level, and Greenbrier County schools will continue to exceed these requirements:

Grades K-4: 315 minutes per day

Grades 5-8: 330 minutes per day

Grades 9-12: 345 minutes per day

The new schedule will take effect on the first day of the school year, with students in grades 1-12 returning on August 26.

Kindergarten begins on September 3, and Pre-K starts on September 5.

Busing schedule considerations impact each school’s daily schedule.

Alderson Elementary: 7:50 AM – 2:35 PM

Crichton Elementary: 7:50 AM – 2:27 PM

Eastern Greenbrier Middle: 8:00 AM – 2:48 PM
