CASS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Steeped in history and surrounded by the stunning landscapes of West Virginia, the Greenbrier Express steam excursion promises a captivating journey for railway enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Departing from Cass Depot in Pocahontas County, the hub of the world’s largest fleet of geared Shay locomotives, this approximately 6-hour roundtrip excursion takes passengers on a 30-mile adventure through the heart of the Mountain State.
The star of the show is none other than the legendary turn-of-the-century class C-80 Shay locomotive, #5. Having traversed Cheat Mountain for an astounding 115 years, this venerable engine holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously operational locomotives on its original line.
In fact, it proudly claims the title of the oldest operable Shay locomotive in existence.
The Greenbrier Express embarks from the meticulously restored town of Cass, an important historical landmark in its own right. Following the picturesque course of the Greenbrier River, the train winds its way to the charming mountain village of Durbin.
Upon arrival, all ticket holders are treated to a catered lunch at carefully selected spots such as the train car, the depot, or the adjacent restaurants on Main Street.
En route to Durbin, passengers are treated to the mesmerizing sights of the 950,000-acre Monongahela National Forest. This captivating wilderness boasts forested mountains that unfold at every twist and turn of the river.
The journey often provides close encounters with the local wildlife, including deer, river otters, and black bears. Avian enthusiasts are also in for a treat, as sightings of eagles, hawks, ospreys, and various aquatic birds are a common occurrence.
The historic roots of this railway trace back to its original construction in 1902 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, primarily aimed at timber resource development. Over the years, the railroad played a pivotal role in the region’s growth until a decline in rail traffic led to the abandonment of most of the line in 1978.
Today’s excursion focuses on the northernmost 15-mile stretch, acquired by the West Virginia State Rail Authority. While the line faced a major setback due to a catastrophic flood in 1985, a remarkable joint effort between the WV State Rail Authority and Durbin & Greenbrier Valley RR brought it back to life.
Now, visitors can relish a new and unique experience within the iconic Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
