BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Judge H. L. “Kirk” Kirkpatrick has officially announced his candidacy for a seat on the West Virginia Supreme Court is official, seeking to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Tim Armstead.
“Justice Armstead had a passion for fairness,” Kirkpatrick said. “If granted the honor to serve, I will continue his commitment to ensuring that every West Virginian is treated with honesty, respect, and impartial justice.”
A lifelong resident of Beckley, Kirkpatrick brings more than 30 years of judicial experience to the race.
He presided over the nationally televised Natalie Cochran murder trial and has been recognized for his professionalism, legal knowledge, transparency, and commitment to justice. His judicial career includes handling a wide range of cases, from traffic appeals to complex murder and corruption trials.
Kirkpatrick is also credited with leading a Juvenile Drug Court program that focused on helping young people struggling with addiction. Supporters have cited the program’s impact on the lives of participating youth.
In 2020, Kirkpatrick was named a Fellow of the West Virginia Bar Foundation in recognition of his service to the legal profession and dedication to his community.
Outside the courtroom, Kirkpatrick is a member of The United Methodist Temple in Beckley. He has been married to his wife, Becky, for 50 years, and they have twin sons. The couple lives in Beckley with their two dogs.
