WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A routine roadside assist turned into a high-speed pursuit and multiple criminal charges Sunday after a West Virginia State Trooper encountered a driver who allegedly fled, showed signs of intoxication, and was found with firearms and drugs.
According to the incident report, the trooper was conducting stationary patrol around 11:20 a.m. on February 9, 2026, when a red Jeep pulled alongside the cruiser. The driver, identified as Cameron Wyatt, exited the vehicle, prompting the trooper to initiate a motorist assist through Wyoming County 911. Wyatt reportedly told the trooper everything was fine and returned to his vehicle.
After leaving the area, the trooper followed and observed erratic driving behavior. Authorities say Wyatt accelerated at a high rate of speed, ran a stop sign, and turned onto Route 16 toward Mullens. The trooper activated emergency lights and reached speeds of approximately 90 mph in a 55 mph zone while attempting to catch up.
During the stop, the driver allegedly turned off the vehicle’s lights and pulled over. When approached, Wyatt exited the Jeep clutching his chest as if experiencing a medical emergency. The trooper detained him and reported immediately smelling alcohol.
Investigators say Wyatt later admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana at a Super Bowl party in Beckley. Field sobriety tests were not conducted due to his condition at the time of arrest.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered two firearms, a small amount of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Dispatchers also confirmed Wyatt did not hold a valid driver’s license and had two prior convictions for driving on a suspended license.
The firearms were identified as a Ruger .380 and a Walther 9mm pistol.
Wyatt faces multiple charges, including fleeing in a vehicle, driving under the influence, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and third-offense driving on a suspended license.
He was transported to the State Police Beckley Detachment for processing. After being medically evaluated and consenting to a blood draw when a breath test could not be completed, Wyatt was taken to Southern Regional Jail to await arraignment in Wyoming County Magistrate Court.
