RAVENSWOOD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Jackson County man is in custody following an alleged domestic assault involving a hatchet that left his wife injured.
At approximately 11:24 a.m. on Saturday, Jackson County 911 received a call reporting a woman struck in the head with a hatchet. The victim told authorities that her husband, Garry Wells, had attacked her at their home on Fleshers Run Road in Ravenswood, West Virginia.
The victim and a caller seeking help were at a Marathon gas station on Wilding Road when Ravenswood Police Department officers and EMS arrived. The victim provided a statement to law enforcement before being transported for medical care. She stated that Garry “just snapped” during an argument at their residence and struck her with a hatchet. She believed the weapon was still at or near the house.
Law enforcement proceeded to the residence, where Garry Wells exited with his hands raised. He was taken into custody without incident and initially refused to speak with authorities. However, once at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, he agreed to provide a statement.
During an interview, Garry admitted he and his wife had been arguing for several days. He claimed his wife swung at him with her fist and then grabbed a hatchet from the wall. Garry stated he also grabbed a hatchet, and during a struggle, one of the weapons struck her. He further admitted to cleaning blood from the floor with a rag and Windex after the incident.
Garry Wells has been charged with one count of malcious wounding.
