WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – A jury has found Timothy Kennedy guilty on all charges related to the fatal shooting of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard, bringing a verdict in a case that drew statewide attention and deep emotion across the law enforcement community.
The verdict was announced Friday following a trial centered on the June 2023 shooting death of Maynard in Mingo County.
Prosecutors said Maynard was part of a group of troopers attempting to serve a warrant in the Beech Creek area when gunfire erupted. Maynard was struck during the confrontation and later died from his injuries.
Following the verdict, the West Virginia Troopers Association released a statement saying “justice was served” for Maynard, describing him as a husband, father and dedicated state trooper who “gave his life in service to the people of this state.”
Authorities said the incident happened while troopers were trying to serve a warrant connected to a wanted suspect.
The shooting sparked a large police response and led to an intense manhunt in the rugged southern West Virginia terrain before Kennedy was eventually taken into custody.
The case has remained one of the most closely watched criminal trials in the state in recent years, with fellow troopers, law enforcement supporters and members of the public closely following court proceedings.
In its statement, the Troopers Association said no verdict could erase the pain carried by Maynard’s family, friends and fellow troopers, but added that accountability had been delivered. The organization also praised the strength shown by the Maynard family throughout the trial.
Maynard had served with the West Virginia State Police for several years and was remembered by colleagues as a respected trooper committed to protecting his community.
Sentencing for Kennedy is expected at a later date.
