MONTGOMERY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Montgomery man was arrested Wednesday morning after police say he attacked a doctor at Montgomery General Hospital, forcing staff members to step in and restrain him.
According to the Montgomery Police Department, officers were called to the hospital around 7 a.m. on September 3, 2025, for a disturbance. When they arrived, a nurse outside the building, visibly shaken, told officers that Steven Sopko had attacked Dr. Andrew Cook.
Inside, officers found Sopko already restrained by Dr. Cook and several staff members. Witnesses told police Sopko had been discharged from the emergency room shortly before the incident and became irate in the ambulance bay, punching and kicking hospital windows, sliding doors, and even a hospital van.
Hospital staff said Sopko eventually reentered the building, where he punched the clerks’ glass window, ripped off his shirt, and kicked through a wooden door to force his way into the ER. Once inside, police say Sopko became aggressive toward staff and struck Dr. Cook in the face. The doctor defended himself, and with the help of others, managed to restrain Sopko until officers arrived.
Sopko was taken into custody and charged with one count of assault during the commission of a felony (§61-2-10).
