GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A routine call to a domestic disturbance turned serious on Saturday, May 10, 2025, when state police arrested a man accused of violently assaulting a woman earlier that day.
At approximately 3:55 p.m., a trooper responded to a report from Greenbrier County EOC about a disturbance outside the Marathon Little General Store on Seneca Trail North. Witnesses said a man was yelling and cursing at a woman as she exited a gray four-door vehicle to enter the store.
Upon arrival, the trooper identified both individuals and separated them. The man was confirmed to be Jacob Mallow Vanburen, and the woman was identified.
While Mr. Vanburen refused to speak with authorities, the victim provided a harrowing account of the events that had occurred around noon the same day. She told the trooper that Vanburen had choked her with both hands until she could no longer breathe, nearly causing her to lose consciousness. She also said that Vanburen slammed her to the ground and stomped her head, leaving her with a black eye and a deep forehead laceration, both of which were visible to the responding trooper.
The assault allegedly took place at her residence on Waids Draft Road in White Sulphur Springs before the two left for the gas station.
Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that Vanburen was already wanted on multiple warrants: a Circuit Court Capias out of Greenbrier County, WV, and another out of Franklin County, VA for possession of a controlled substance.
Vanburen was taken into custody at 4:03 p.m. and charged with:
-
Domestic Battery
-
Strangulation
-
Malicious Assault
-
Multiple outstanding warrants
He was processed at WVSP Lewisburg Detachment and then transported to Southern Regional Jail.
