SUMMERS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A heated family argument over a weedeater spiraled into an alleged fistfight Monday night, prompting police to respond to a disturbance at a residence on Maple Street.
Officers arrived around 10:13 p.m. to find Russel Adkins, heavily intoxicated and nursing a small cut above his right eye. Adkins told authorities that his 15-year-old nephew, who is currently staying with him for the summer, attacked him unprovoked, allegedly after drinking alcohol supplied by a woman.
However, the teen offered a very different version of events.
According to the juvenile, he was drinking alcohol provided by Adkins, not the woman, in the basement when he came upstairs to ask for a cigarette. That’s when Adkins allegedly demanded the return of his weedeater, sparking a verbal dispute. The teen claimed Adkins then took a fighting stance and swung at him. The teen said he dodged most of the blow and retaliated by punching Adkins in the face before retreating to the basement.
During police processing, Adkins continued to bring up his missing weedeater, a detail that seemed to fuel the entire confrontation.
Adkins has been charged with Contributing To Delinquency Minor and Domestic Assault.
