HUNTINGTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Huntington man was arrested early last Sunday following a domestic disturbance at a residence on 29th Street.
Officers from the Huntington Police Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:17 a.m. on December 22, 2024, and found 50-year-old Matthew Shuey outside the home.
According to a criminal complaint, Shuey told officers he had been arguing with his fiancée and was asked to leave the residence.
During the encounter, officers reported that Shuey became uncooperative, aggressive, and repeatedly ignored commands to stay back.
When officers attempted to detain him for safety reasons, Shuey allegedly resisted, pulling away and refusing to comply.
Shuey was taken to the ground and detained but continued resisting as officers attempted to move him to a patrol vehicle. Police said he slammed his head multiple times against the cruiser and ignored verbal commands to stop.
Officers warned Shuey he would be pepper-sprayed if he did not comply, but Shuey reportedly continued his behavior, prompting officers to use the spray.
Meanwhile, another officer interviewed Shuey’s fiancée, who stated she feared for her safety during the altercation. She reported that Shuey had been acting erratically in recent days, throwing objects and damaging the home.
She told police she locked herself in a bedroom while Shuey banged on the door and moved in and out of the residence. A relative of the fiancée called 911 after learning of the situation.
Shuey was taken into custody and transported to the Western Regional Jail.
Due to exposure to pepper spray, he was not processed at the station to avoid contamination of police equipment and personnel.
Shuey has been charged with domestic violence. He is currently out on bond.
