FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Huntington man has been charged following an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run that occurred earlier this month along Interstate 77 in Fayette County.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the West Virginia State Police, troopers were dispatched to the 63.5-mile marker of I-77 northbound around 11:51 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found a deceased individual with severe injuries lying along the fog line of the right lane. A damaged black SUV was also located at the scene.
Troopers determined that the vehicle responsible for the fatal crash had fled before they arrived.
Investigators reviewed toll booth and roadway camera footage from that day and identified a white GW Noble box truck as a possible suspect vehicle.
The truck, operated by 59-year-old Anthony Wayne Hay of Huntington, was later found parked behind Sam’s Club at the Southridge Shopping Center in Kanawha County.
A supervisor from GW Noble confirmed Hay was driving the truck on the day of the crash. The supervisor told investigators that Hay had reported hitting a deer that afternoon.
Troopers obtained surveillance footage from the truck and later interviewed Hay after locating him during a traffic stop on October 9.
According to the complaint, Hay initially denied striking a pedestrian and claimed the visible damage on his truck was from a previous deer collision.
However, troopers discovered that photographs on Hay’s phone showing a deer strike had altered timestamps, indicating they were taken after the fatal incident.
State Police later reviewed footage from the box truck, which allegedly showed the vehicle crossing the white fog line, striking both a motor vehicle and a pedestrian, and continuing northbound without stopping.
The video also showed Hay stopping under an overpass and later attempting to clean and repair the damaged area of the truck.
On October 12, the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team processed the truck and recovered evidence, including what investigators believe to be human blood under the passenger side of the vehicle.
Hay reportedly told troopers, “I’m sorry,” after his interview before walking back to his vehicle.
Hay has been charged with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Death. He is currently at Western Regional Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
