FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Milton man was arrested in the early morning hours of July 10 after allegedly becoming combative with police while intoxicated on Court Street in downtown Fayetteville.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Fayetteville Police Department, officers on patrol observed a shirtless, shoeless man staggering near the Secret Sandwich Society and Tequila Taco Bar around 12:30 a.m.
Officers identified the individual as 55-year-old Gary Haven Campbell.
Police say Campbell appeared visibly intoxicated, exhibiting slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol.
When officers approached to check on his welfare, Campbell reportedly became irate and refused assistance, insisting he was “just walking” toward U.S. Route 19.
Despite being warned not to walk on the highway, Campbell allegedly continued to disobey officers’ instructions, becoming increasingly agitated and confrontational.
According to the complaint, Campbell used derogatory slurs toward officers and refused a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer.
At one point, he walked down the center of Court Street in an apparent attempt to prove his sobriety.
Police say Campbell then sat on the sidewalk briefly before standing and challenging an officer to a fight, stating, “I will f*** you up” while removing his backpack.
Officers attempted to detain him, but Campbell allegedly resisted arrest and had to be taken to the ground before he could be handcuffed.
While being transported to the police department, Campbell reportedly continued to threaten officers, saying he would “kick [their] ass” and return the next day.
He later consented to a preliminary breath test, which showed a blood alcohol concentration of .269 — more than three times the legal limit.
Campbell was processed and taken to Southern Regional Jail and given a $5,000 bond. He faces charges of public intoxication, obstructing, and assault on a police officer.
