HINTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A man was caught inside a Hinton residence Thursday evening after allegedly breaking in while the homeowner was away.
According to Patrolman J.J. Crawford of the Hinton Police Department, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at a home on 4th Avenue. The homeowner had left the residence earlier in the afternoon and returned to find a window on the back door broken and the door unlocked. She immediately contacted Summers County 911.
Upon arrival, Officer Crawford entered the home and discovered a man, later identified as William Michael Rutherford, walking downstairs carrying two bags. Inside the bags, police found several items, including clothing and a small dragon statue, with an estimated value of about $60.
Rutherford claimed he had previously been given permission to be at the house to help with cleanup but admitted he did not have permission to enter that day and had broken the window to get inside. The cost to replace the broken window was estimated at $120.
Police say Rutherford’s own statements and officer observations confirmed the unauthorized entry.
