FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An inmate incarcerated at Mt. Olive Correctional Center on Sexual Assault charges was convicted and sentenced on Thursday for the assault of a corrections officer.
The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney of Fayette County reports that, on Thursday, June 1, 2023, Tyrone Roberts – 49 years old of Mt. Olive, WV – plead guilty to the felony crime of Malicious Assault on a Correctional Facility Employee.
Roberts reportedly elected to immediately proceed to sentencing and was subsequently sentenced by Fayette County Circuit Judge Thomas H. Ewing to serve 3-15 years in prison. This sentence is in addition to the 15-35 year sentence already being served in relation to a previous conviction for First-Degree Sexual Assault.
These sentences are to be served consecutively, and Roberts must serve a minimum of three additional years in prison after completion of his previous sentence before potentially becoming eligible for parole.
The incident in question occurred on January 6, 2019, when Roberts refused to close his cell door as a correctional employee was conducting nightly lockdown duties. Roberts would become combative with the officer and struck the officer twice in the face, resulting in multiple facial fractures.
The case was investigated by the West Virginia State Police and was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Sarah F. Smith.
