BECKLEY, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – A Raleigh County man involved in the killing of a fellow inmate was sentenced by Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick in Raleigh County Circuit Court on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Galen Ray Stewart was one of four men charged with the first-degree murder of Kevin Whitaker at Southern Regional Jail in February of 2019. Then men were charged with conspiracy following Whitaker’s death.
On Wednesday, Kirkpatrick sentenced Stewart to not less than one nor more than five years incarceration and agreed to give him full credit for time served- 285 days, as well as partial credit for pretrial home confinement- 205 days, for a total of 490 days.
Before being placed in the custody of the West Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) Stewart apologized to the victim’s family for their loss, as well as for what transpired inside the jail.
