FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Anthony Ciliberti, Jr., Prosecuting Attorney, announces that on April 16, 2024, Charles Redman, age 55 of Mount Olive, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to the felony offense of second-degree murder before Circuit Judge Thomas H. Ewing. Redman is facing ten to forty years in prison when he is sentenced on July 8, 2024.Â
On November 20, 2020, at approximately 8:45 pm, West Virginia State Police received a report of a stabbing at Mount Olive Correctional Center, located in Mt. Olive, Fayette County. Investigators advised Troopers that inmate Charles Redman had stabbed another inmate multiple times and that the inmate had succumbed to his injuries and died that evening at Montgomery General Hospital.Â
Video surveillance footage obtained from the prison showed Redman seated at a card table on the main floor of the residence hall. The victim appeared to walk around the table and sit beside Redman. Redman then attempted to punch the victim as he was seated at the table. The victim left the table and went to an upstairs hallway, followed by Redman. Video surveillance showed Redman approach the victim and begin stabbing him without provocation. The video evidence showed that the victim was not the aggressor during the confrontation. Video surveillance also showed Redman discarding something under a plumbing access door. Investigators recovered an improvised weapon made of a piece of metal that measured approximately 8 inches long. This weapon appeared to be covered in blood, and the West Virginia State Police confirmed the presence of the victim’s DNA on the weapon. The victim suffered four distinct stab wounds along with multiple abrasions and lacerations, and his autopsy report noted the stab wounds caused the victim’s death.Â
Redman also indicated to correctional officers after the stabbing that he was responsible for the incident and confessed to killing the victim during a recorded phone call to a relative.Â
The West Virginia State Police investigated this crime. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Sarah F. Smith and Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jennifer D. Crane prosecuted the case.Â
