MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is offering a free beginner handgun safety course later this month, with limited seating available.
The class is scheduled for April 25, 2026, beginning at 10 a.m., and will be open to the first 10 participants who sign up. Officials said the course will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis due to the limited class size.
The training is designed for individuals who are unfamiliar with firearms, particularly handguns, and will cover the basic fundamentals of handgun safety and shooting.
Instruction will be provided by a National Rifle Association-certified handgun instructor, along with NRA Range Safety Officers.
Participants must provide their own ammunition.
The course will take place rain or shine, and attendees are encouraged to prepare for possible inclement weather.
Officials noted the class may also count toward concealed carry license requirements for those interested. However, the course is open to anyone, including individuals who already possess a concealed carry permit.
The class will begin with a classroom session held at the Sheriff’s Office, followed by a hands-on portion at a firing range.
Those interested in attending are asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 304-436-8523 to register. Participants should leave their name and phone number to receive updates regarding the class.
