WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Winter weather advisories are in effect for multiple parts of West Virginia, with accumulating snow and slick roads expected throughout the day on Monday.
Forecasters warn that travel could be hazardous during both the morning and evening commute as temperatures remain below freezing.
Southern and Southeastern West Virginia
A winter weather advisory from 1 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday covers portions of Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, Webster and Pocahontas counties.
These areas are forecast to receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, with locally up to 5 inches on the highest ridges.
Cities and towns including Beckley, Oak Hill, Summersville, Richwood, Snowshoe and Marlinton may see snow-covered roads early Monday.
Southwestern and Central Counties
Another advisory in effect for McDowell, Wyoming, Logan, Mingo, Boone, Clay and Braxton counties predicts 1 to 3 inches of snowfall, with heavier pockets possible.
Communities such as Welch, Logan, Chapmanville, Pineville, Sutton and Gassaway may experience slippery travel, particularly on untreated and rural roadways.
Travel Impacts
The National Weather Service warns that:
- Roads could become snow-covered and hazardous
- Slippery bridges and overpasses are likely
- Reduced visibility may occur during heavier snowfall
- Temperatures will remain cold enough to support accumulation on roadways
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and check updated road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out.
Snow is expected to taper off gradually Monday evening, but freezing temperatures could maintain slick surfaces through the night.
