Midland Trail 11, James Monroe 4
Lindside – Midland Trail scored four runs in the first inning and pulled away with six more in the final three, beating James Monroe 11-4 Tuesday night in Lindside and advancing to next week’s state tournament in South Charleston.
Sydney Sheets led the way for Trail with three hits, driving in two runs. Faith Bailes was also impressive for the Lady Patriots, going 2-for-3.
For James Monroe Karissa Hunnicutt led the way with two hits in the loss.
St. Albans 9, Greenbrier East 0
St. Albans – St. Albans scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule, beating Greenbrier East 9-0Tuesday in Game 2 of the Class AAA Region 3 championship.
The Red Dragons’ Kendall Stoffel did it all for her team, pitching five shutout innings, striking out nine and going 2-for-4 at the plate.
St. Albans second baseman Gracie Payne got things rolling in the first when she crushed a three-run bomb to give her team the early lead. She wasn’t the only Red dragon to homer and drive in three as sophomore Tayven Stephenson did the same, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 3 will be held today in Fairlea with the winner going to the state tournament next week in South Charleston.
