TRENTON, NJ (LOOTPRESS) – Democrat Mikie Sherrill has won the election for governor of New Jersey.
Sherrill, a congresswoman, defeated Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli and his running mate, James Gannon, in a race that remained close throughout.
Sherrill’s campaign focused on affordability, promising to “drive down costs” for New Jersey residents, including housing and health care.
She also criticized President Donald Trump, saying his economic decisions pose a threat to the state.
Among her proposed policies, Sherrill pledged to consolidate smaller school districts to reduce property tax rates and voiced opposition to private prisons in New Jersey.
Near the end of the tight race, Sherrill’s military records became a point of contention after the Trump administration released them largely unredacted.
Ciattarelli, who said he had not seen the records, accused Sherrill of misrepresenting her background, while Sherrill claimed Ciattarelli circulated the documents.
Dale Caldwell, president of Centenary University, will serve as Sherrill’s lieutenant governor.
