MONROE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Monroe County will have a new Sheriff in town.
Voters in Monroe County went to the polls on Tuesday, May 14, and voted for many races, but one of the most watched was the Sheriff’s race. Republican Michael Heller defeated Republican Scott Miller. Heller received 1,726 votes, while Miller captured 475 votes.
No candidates were running on the Democratic ticket. Heller will run in the General Election in November unopposed.
The current Sheriff is Michael Miller of Marie, WV. The Monroe County Commission met in Special Session on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, to select an interim Sheriff to fill the vacancy that was left when former Sheriff Jeff Jones resigned.
Heller served our citizenry as a United States Marine from 1984 to 2005 and wore this county’s uniform as a Deputy Sheriff from 2005 until my retirement in 2023. That ‘retirement’ saw him out of uniform for 53 days until he returned as a Chief Deputy to the present.
