FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Shannon Morris has been appointed the temporary sheriff of Fayette County following the resignation and retirement of sitting Sheriff Mike Fridley.
The Fayette County Commission made the appointment in an emergency meeting Thursday morning.
Morris has been a longtime member of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and was serving as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Fridley.
Fridley announced his resignation and retirement on Wednesday after accepting a job with the Fayette County Board of Education as Fayette County Schools Security and Safety Officer for the upcoming school year.
The board voted to hire Fridley in a unanimous vote at their regular meeting on Tuesday.
Morris will serve as sheriff until a new one is selected by the commission.
The Fayette County Commission will accept applications for sheriff until August 6th.
A new sheriff will be elected in November and sworn in in January.
As of today, Republican Jess McMullen is running for sheriff unopposed in the General Election.
