BEAVER, WV (LOOTPRESS) – New River Community and Technical College (NRCTC) has been awarded $2.2 million through the Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) from the U.S. Department of Education, a highly competitive federal grant designed to improve student success, institutional capacity, and long-term sustainability at colleges serving high-need populations.
The multi-year grant will support a comprehensive initiative to strengthen academic programs, expand student support services, enhance workforce alignment, and modernize systems that directly impact student retention, completion, and career readiness.
“This significant federal investment affirms our mission and the critical role New River Community and Technical College plays in transforming lives and strengthening our regional workforce,” said Dr. Bonny Copenhaver, President. “This grant allows us to expand services, remove barriers to student success, and ensure our programs align with the needs of today’s learners and employers.”
Funding from the Strengthening Institutions Program will support several key priorities, including:
- Expanded student advising, tutoring, and retention services
- Enhanced academic program delivery and assessment
- Increased access to peer recovery services that support students in recovery from substance use disorder and promote overall student well-being
- Improved technology infrastructure and data-informed decision making
- Strengthened career pathways and workforce partnerships
- Professional development to support faculty and staff excellence
The initiative focuses on increasing access and success for students who face financial, academic, or systemic barriers to higher education, while positioning the college for sustainable growth and improved outcomes.
“This grant allows us to take a holistic approach to student success,” said Mr. Steve Lacek, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. “By investing in both people and systems, we are building an environment where students can thrive from enrollment through graduation and into meaningful employment.”
The Strengthening Institutions Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Education to help eligible institutions achieve long-term improvements in educational quality and institutional effectiveness. NRCTC was selected based on demonstrated need, strong project design, and a clear plan for measurable outcomes.
Grant implementation will begin immediately and continue over the next three years, with regular evaluation to ensure accountability and impact.
