CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia state employees will not receive Juneteenth as a day off this year, according to a statement from Governor Patrick Morrisey’s office.
“The answer is no,” the governor’s office said in response to whether state employees would be given the holiday off.
Instead, Governor Morrisey will formally recognize Juneteenth with an official proclamation acknowledging the importance of the day and encouraging residents to reflect on the end of slavery in the United States.
“Gov. Morrisey will be formally recognizing Juneteenth with an official proclamation recognizing the significance of the day and will encourage all West Virginians to take a moment to commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S.,” the statement reads.
Due to ongoing financial constraints, the state will not be sponsoring any official Juneteenth activities.
“Due to the continued fiscal challenges facing West Virginia, state government will not be sponsoring any formal activities,” the governor’s office said.
