OAK HILL, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – The City of Oak Hill wishes to join 40 other West Virginia cities- including Beckley, Montgomery and Charleston- by implementing a new sales tax.
According to Oak Hill City Councilman Dave Perry, if the tax proposal is approved Oak Hill will be able to tax goods and services, as well as Amazon order purchases within the city.
In a recent meeting, Council authorized the Oak Hill city manager to pursue the application process for the tax increase. This process, Perry says, will take one year to complete, meaning, if approved, the tax will not take effect until 2022.
As part of the application process, Oak Hill must hold public hearings to discuss the tax. The Council will also need to host a first and second reading of the proposal for the tax to be approved.
When asked, Perry stated that there are no restrictions on what the tax can be used for. Street paving and services, parks and recreation, police services, and park facilities were several areas he highlighted.
“I think this is very important for the future of the city, especially since local property taxes coming out of the county have been reduced,” Perry said. “In terms of sustaining a budget and growing services and providing services to citizens, it is very important.”
