SUNDIAL, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One lane of West Virginia Route 3 near the community of Sundial has reopened after a massive rockslide forced the highway to close early Thursday, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.
The rockslide occurred around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2026, shutting down the roadway.
WVDOH cleanup crews worked through the night to clear the slide. With assistance from equipment provided by Alpha Metallurgical Resources to break up the largest boulders, crews were able to reopen one lane by Friday morning, July 31.
The West Virginia Division of Highways said crews hope to have both lanes reopened by the end of the day Friday.
