FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A man is dead following a structure fire in Fayette County late Friday morning, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Jess McMullen said deputies were traveling along Route 61 around 11 a.m. when they noticed smoke in the area. As they rounded a curve, they were flagged down and discovered a residence fully engulfed in flames.
Witnesses told deputies that a male occupant remained inside the home. Deputies and nearby residents attempted to enter the structure but were unable to do so due to the intensity of the fire.
The home was ultimately destroyed. Authorities later confirmed the male occupant died in the fire.
Officials said the flames also spread to a nearby residence, causing additional damage before crews were able to bring both fires under control.
Fire departments from Montgomery, Loup Creek, Oak Hill, Boomer and Armstrong Creek responded and worked together to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
The cause and origin of the fire remain unknown.
The incident is under investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department in coordination with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
No additional details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
