PRINCETON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Dr. David Arthur Mullins, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, a surgeon at WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital (PCH), has been selected by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to serve as the vice chair of the national Commission on Cancer (CoC) Accreditation Committee.
ACS is at the forefront of setting standards for cancer care, and its CoC is a consortium of organizations dedicated to establishing and raising those standards of care to improve survival rates and quality of life for patients.
“I am honored to serve in a leadership position for an organization that is making such a difference in how medical facilities prevent, diagnose and treat cancer,” said Dr. Mullins. “I have seen, firsthand, how CoC accreditation is improving care and outcomes for those with a cancer diagnosis.”
Hospitals and institutions earn CoC accreditation after undergoing a rigorous evaluation by demonstrating compliance with the CoC standards that are developed to promote the highest-quality cancer care.
“In helping to lead PCH through its own accreditation, I know the dedication required to commit to best practices and highest standards across the board – inclusive of everything from facility and equipment requirements, personnel, nutrition and rehabilitation services, to addressing barriers to care,” Dr. Mullins added. “I look forward to working with medical institutions across the country to help them achieve their own accreditation.”
PCH is one of 11 CoC accredited programs in West Virginia. More than 70% of recently diagnosed patients with cancer each year are treated at one of the approximately 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the United States.
Dr. Mullins has been an ACS fellow since 2004, is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
