WOOD COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Police in West Virginia are currently searching for a man who led officers on a high-speed chase with children in the car.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, December 11, 2023, a routine traffic stop conducted by a Wood County Sheriff’s Deputy escalated into a high-speed pursuit, putting lives at risk.
The incident unfolded when a white 2019 Dodge Caravan was flagged for speeding on Rt. 50 near Rt. 47.
Upon stopping the vehicle, police discovered the driver to be Benjamin R. Barber.
What initially seemed like a routine stop took a different turn as Barber was found to have an active warrant. Refusing to comply, Barber accelerated away, initiating a pursuit.
The pursuit unfolded with Barber exhibiting extreme recklessness, cutting in front of traffic, traveling against the flow of traffic, disregarding traffic signals, and reaching speeds exceeding 120mph.
A small child was observed in the rear seat, and a teenager was found in the front seat during this hazardous chase.
The pursuit extended into Ohio, where visual contact was lost.
Warrants have since been issued for Benjamin R. Barber (DOB: 04/23/1981, residence unknown) on charges of Fleeing with reckless indifference and child neglect creating serious risk. Notably, Barber is also wanted in Washington County, Ohio.
