CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Police are warning the public of a newly reported phone scam that has been targeting West Virginia residents.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), Detective C.A. Boner with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Section uncovered a potential new scam after the Kanawha County Commission received a call from a concerned citizen.
The citizen believed he had been contacted by a Frontier Communications representative and was told that Frontier Communications was phasing out all landline services.
The citizen was troubled by the news as he did not have any alternative means of communication.
While the conversation continued, the alleged Frontier worker appeared to be trying to sell him something which raised his suspicions.
The KCSO learned that Frontier Communications DID NOT place this call and they are NOT phasing out any landline services.
Detective Boner has identified the phone number used (720-515-2970) as a number associated with various scam attempts and it is untraceable.
The KCSO says that the citizens did not fall victim to the scam, but they continue to remind everyone to stay cautious of these various schemes scammers are using.
The KCSO recommends when in doubt, hang up, call a published number that is listed for the business, and speak with someone about the legitimacy of the call.
They also recommend always speaking with your personal banking advisor before withdrawing or transferring large sums of money and never using gift cards to exchange currency.
