The 50th annual Allen D. Coppinger Tournament kicked off Saturday with Beckley, James Monroe, Tazewell, Va. and Graham, Va. all picking up day one wins.
Beckley opened up with solid 15-4 win over PikeView in six innings led by Ty Evans who had a pair of hits and three RBI. A Gallaher, Brady Williams and Isaiah Lewis also drove in two runs for the Flying Eagles. Chase Tolliver and Lewis each had a double.
James Monroe scored scored five runs in the first inning and led 6-0 before Shady Spring rallied to tie the game at 7-7 after five innings.
Peyton Gardinier scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth for the Mavericks. Gardinier singled with two outs and Kadyn Hines followed with a double. When the ball could not be handled in left field, Gardinier scored for the 8-7 lead.
Carson Koen pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Gardinier had two hits and an RBI, while Hines also had and RBI.
Aiden Calvert had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.
Graham scored in all five innings to knock off Bluefield 12-2 at Bowen Field Saturday. Nate Redmond had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Beavers.
Cooper Hale and Kaedon Gregory each had a double and two RBI for the G-Men.
Hits were plentiful at Lou Peery Field, but Tazewell made the most of its 13-hit tally beating Princeton 17-5 in five innings.
Tre Blankenship had a home run and five RBI to pace the Bulldogs. Luke Childress had a double and three RBI, while Finn Moss and Sean Dillon also had a three-RBI day.
John Meadows had a home run for the Tigers and drove in two runs. Lucas Monaghan collected three hits on the day, including a double and Zack Jenkins had two hits.
