Tazewell, Va. 17, Woodrow Wilson 7 (5 innings)
Bluefield – Tazewell exploded for 11 runs in the first inning to defeat Woodrow Wilson 17-7 in five innings at the Coppinger Tournament Tuesday.
The Flying Eagles were their own worst enemy committing six errors in the setback.
Logan Williams had a pair of hits, while Chase Tolliver, Danny Dickenson, Blake Stratton, Micah Clay, Reid Warden and Blake Nixon each had an RBI.
Woodrow Wilson finished 1-1 in pool play and will advance to Wednesday’s single-elimination knockout round against a yet to be determined opponent.
Nicholas County 4, Liberty 0
Zach Barker hurled a two-hit shutout, striking out 12 batters to lead Nicholas County past Liberty 4-0 Tuesday in Glen Daniel.
Alex Pritt led the Grizzlies at the plate with three hits, including a double and an RBI. Cole Brown also smacked a double and scored twice, while Kendall Giles had a single and knocked in a run.
Nicholas County travels to Independence Thursday. Liberty is also in action Thursday, tentatively at Woodrow Wilson.
Independence 22, Wyoming East 7 (5 innings)
New Richmond – After trailing 2-0 in the first inning, Independence exploded for 22 runs over the next four frames to roll past Wyoming East 22-7 Tuesday.
Michael McKinney blasted a grand slam and Elijah Farrington collected three hits including a double. Carson Brown had two hits and drove in five runs, while Tanner Sipes, Clay Basham and James Williams each had two RBI.
Tanner Whitten had two hits for Wyoming East including a three-run homer. Jacob Howard had a double and two RBI and Zach Hunt added a double and also drove in a run for the Warriors.
Independence hosts Nicholas County Thursday at Joseph H. Goddard Field, while East will host Van the same night.
Oak Hill 18, Greater Beckley Christian 3 (5 innings)
Oak Hill – The Red Devils pounded out 19 hits, including six extra base hits, to roll past Greater Beckley 18-3 Tuesday in five innings.
Braxton Hall was perfect in four trips driving in five runs, while Zane Wolfe had four RBI and scored four times for Oak Hill.
Trent Rider had three hits along with a triple, driving in two runs. Jayden McClain also had a triple and two RBI.
Hall, Jacob Ward and Tyler Treadway each had a double.
Both teams play again Thursday when Oak Hill hosts Hurricane and Greater Beckley hosts James Monroe.
Bluefield 4, Richlands 3
Bluefield – Bluefield scored three unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings Tuesday to beat Richlands, Va. 4-3 Tuesday at Bowen Field in the Coppinger Tournament.
Kerry Collins and Ryker Brown combined to strikeout 17 batters for the Beavers with Brown fanning 11 of them in 4.1 innings of work.
Caleb Fuller led the Beavers at the plate with a pair of hits and an RBI while Hunter Harmon and Kerry Collins drove in a run each.
