A source confirmed to Lootpress on Wednesday that former Greater Beckley baseball coach J. P. Stevens was expected to be named the next head baseball coach at Woodrow Wilson High School.
Stevens filled completed his paperwork Thursday morning and will now await approval from the Board of Education. Stevens confirmed to Lootpress Wednesday that he did apply for the job and hopes to get it.
“The fact that you’re going from a small school to one of the biggest in the state makes a huge difference,” Stevens said of his decision to apply for the job.
Joining Stevens on staff, should he get the job, will be former Wyoming East, Marshall and West Virginia Miners standout Josh Zeboskey.
Stevens will likely take over the position left vacant by Chris Walls, who coached one season before stepping down.
Stevens is familiar with the area, coaching travel ball teams and having spent the previous three years across town. He experienced success while leading the Crusaders, guiding them to a sectional title in 2019.
He took over at Greater Beckley in 2019 following the departure of Walls, who was the coach at Greater Beckley from 2014 to 2018.
