Thursday the WVSSAC approved a change to the boys and girls basketball postseason.
No longer will there be a sectional championship as all teams in a region will be seeded into one regional tournament with the last two remaining teams in the region advancing to the eight-team state tournament field. There will be no championship game between those two teams.
Attached is the press release.
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (May 16, 2024) – The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s Board of Directors has approved a change in the format for the preliminary rounds of the state boys’ and girls’ basketball championships beginning in 2024-25.
The format change received a unanimous recommendation of both the boys and girls basketball coaches advisory committee prior to WSSAC board approval. The new format will include all four classes (Class AAAA, Class AAA, Class AA, and Class A).
The new format will begin with the two existing sections in each region combining into a two-game regional tournament. There will be two final games in each region. The two champions in each of the four regions will advance to the state championships in Charleston.
The teams in each region will be seeded by coaches’ balloting. If only seven teams are included in a region, the highest seeded school will receive a first-round bye. In the event of a tie in balloting, the following criteria will be used to resolve the tie: (1) head-to-head competition, (2) total number of wins in classification and above, (3) total number of wins, and (4) toss of coin.
The highest seeded school in each game of the regional tournament will serve as the host school.
The schools participating in the state championships will be reseeded following the regional final games using the current coaches balloting format.
The WSSAC will provide the regional tournament window while maintaining the currently scheduled regional tournament dates.
The revenue sharing structure for the regional games is the same as the past. Schools will split all ticket proceeds for games played prior to the two regional final contests. The ticket sales revenue for the regional final games will be maintained by the WVSSAC.
