Fairlea – In a battle of teams seeking their first win of the season, Bluefield made the return trek to Fairlea worth it.
In a continuation of Friday’s game which was postponed early in the third quarter due to lightning in the area, Bluefield pulled away in the final quarter to earn a 34-19 win over Greenbrier East Monday evening in Fairlea.
Coming in with a 20-19 lead courtesy of Friday’s showing, the Beavers held Greenbrier East in the red zone, cushioning their lead on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Sencere Fields to R.J. Hairston.
Fields capped the contest with an interception on East’s penultimate drive and put the game away with a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the final minutes. For the game Fields threw for 154 yards with two touchdown passes, connecting with Hairston for all five of his completions. He added 75 yards and two scores on the ground and nabbed two interceptions on defense.
Brody Hamric threw for 170 yards and two scores in the loss, connecting with Kaden Stone and Nate Suttle for scores.
Bluefield improves to 1-2 and will host Beckley on Saturday while Greenbrier East drops to 0-3 and will host Alleghany. Va. on Friday.
